Vance McCoy Field Day

Vance McCoy hosted an inquisitive crowd of farmers from southwest Nebraska and across the state. He provided information about his farming operation and how he began experimenting with cover crops to improve soil health and water retention in an area with limited rainfall and groundwater. He demonstrated the benefits of healthy soil structure using a leaf blower to simulate the high winds that are common in the area. Local NRCS representatives were present to talk about conservation programs that are available to help farmers cover the cost of implementing certain practices.
Jordan Uldrich Field Day

Jordan Uldrich had great weather for his field tour. Jordan was happy to show the assembled farmers the regenerative practices he’s been utilizing with a focus on the interrelated relationship between soil health and water quality. He highlighted corn planted in wide rows with a fall forage crop grown in between. Jordan spoke about successes and challenges and earning trust with transparency when other farmers ask him why his fields look different. He also spoke about utilizing AMP grazing with his cattle. NRCS representatives were present and gave an effective demonstration with their rainfall simulator on soil samples from fields with different practices.
Alex McKiernan Field Day

Alex McKiernan hosted farmers and ranchers for a fall field day focused on multispecies grazing practices. Alex demonstrated different fencing techniques that can be utilized for goats and cattle to effectively graze an area while benefitting the ecology of a grassland ecosystem. He also showcased the livestock watering infrastructure that has been installed on his land to enable a versatile paddock rotation. A big topic of conversation was controlling woody encroachment with prescribed fire and targeted manual removal of certain aggressive tree species.
